Top 5 Reasons to Fire Your Doctor – How to Fire Your Doctor

By Verria Kelly, the Good Health Coach

I fired my doctor for the five reasons below, and if you find yourself in a similar situation, then I suggest you do the same!

  • Dismissal of your contributions. Remember, the doctor-patient relationship is a partnership. He or she holds the medical knowledge, but you are the expert on your body. Neither of you can solve your health problems without input from the other.
  • Arguing with you about your test results. If your doctor tells you something that doesn’t make sense, speak up! If he tries to argue you down, just accept the fact that you’ve found someone who thinks he knows better than you and move on. There’s no use in working with someone who doesn’t understand the importance of your contributions.
  • Tries to force you into a certain diagnosis box. If you test negative for a particular illness and your doctor insists that you retake the tests repeatedly, chances are he’s exhausted his knowledge of what’s going on and you’d be better served by moving on. There may be a few cases that call for retaking tests, but overall, it’s not a good idea to stick with someone who repeatedly tests for something specifically because he’s sure that’s what you have.
  • Your doctor tests and doesn’t find anything and tries to convince you that it’s all in your head. Stand fast to what you know to be true. If he can’t help you, find someone who will.
  • He avoids your questions and instead spends your appointment “preaching” about what he knows. Again, this is a partnership so both of you need to contribute if you’re going to find an answer.
  • Remember, you are a healthcare consumer; it's your money, and it's your right to fire your doctor if you don't feel that you're getting proper treatment.
